Mahatma Gandhi được coi là vị cha lập quốc của Ấn Độ, nổi tiếng nhất với cuộc tuần hành ra bãi biển nhằm phản đối luật muối của chính quyền thực dân Anh và vui vẻ vào tù trong suốt thời gian dài.
Ngày 12/3/1930 ông cùng 78 người khởi hành đi bộ từ quê nhà đến bãi biển Dandi trên bờ Ấn Độ Dương. Ngày 5/4/1930, tức sau 23 ngày, vượt qua 386 km, Ganghi cùng hơn 50.000 người tham gia đoàn tuần hành dọc đường, đã đến nơi được chọn để làm hành động tượng trưng chống đạo luật muối bất công của chính quyền thực dân Anh lúc đó.
Hôm nay, 14/2/2017, gần 87 năm sau Gandhi, linh mục Nguyễn Đình Thục đã dẫn đầu đoàn tuần hành gồm hơn 600 đồng bào Nghệ An, dự định đi qua 173 km đến huyện Kỳ Anh, tỉnh Hà Tĩnh, nộp đơn khởi kiện Formosa.
Nếu trước đây Thánh Gandhi tuần hành để chống một đạo luật bất công, thì hôm nay Cha Thục tuần hành để thực thi một quyền công dân hợp pháp của các nạn nhân Formosa là quyền khởi kiện theo luật định.
87 năm trước Thánh Gandhi vượt qua 386 km đạt được mục tiêu của mình, vì ông không bị công an của thực dân Anh phá rối dọc đường. Còn Cha Thục khó có thể vượt qua 173 km dù ngài rất sẵn sàng, vì chắc chắn công an cộng sản sẽ bằng mọi cách ngăn chặn.
Dù đến được hay không toà án Kỳ Anh, cuộc tuần hành vì dân quyền (civil rights) của linh mục Nguyễn Đình Thục ngày 14/2/2017 sẽ đi vào lịch sử hiện đại Việt Nam như ngọn lửa khởi đầu phong trào dân quyền chống chế độ độc tài cộng sản Việt Nam.
Cuộc tuần hành của Cha Thục cũng vĩ đại không kém cuộc tuần hành của Tháng Gandhi 87 năm trước.
