Hạ viện Hoa Kỳ đã thông qua Đạo luật Nhân quyền Dân chủ Hồng Kông (H.R.3289), thể hiện sự ủng hộ của Hoa Kỳ đối với người biểu tình Hồng Kông, những người chống lại sự đàn áp nhân quyền của Trung Quốc.
Trước đó một ngày, Thượng viện đã đồng thuận thông qua.
Chỉ còn chờ một chữ ký của Tổng thống là sẽ thành luật.
Đạo luật này đòi hỏi chính phủ Mỹ mỗi năm phải xác nhận Hồng Kông có đủ quyền tự trị để hội đủ điều kiện giao dịch đặc biệt của Hoa Kỳ.
Ngoài ra, còn có thêm Nghị quyết Quan hệ giữa Hoa Kỳ và Hồng Kông (H.Res.543) công nhận mối quan hệ song phương của Hồng Kông với Hoa Kỳ, lên án sự can thiệp của Cộng hòa Nhân dân Trung Hoa vào các vấn đề của Hồng Kông và ủng hộ quyền biểu tình của người dân Hồng Kông; và đạo luật Bảo vệ Hồng Kông (H.R.4270) để ngăn chặn việc xuất khẩu các trang bị và khói cay chống biểu tình cho nhà cầm quyền Hồng Kông.
Chủ tịch Hạ viện, bà Nancy Pelosi, nói rằng: “Các nhà Dân Chủ và Cộng Hòa trong Hạ viện và Thượng viện đều thống nhất với người dân Hồng Kông.”
