‘Thua là đúng rồi’ – câu chuyện một tiến sĩ gốc Việt nỗ lực thay đổi cái nhìn ‘thiên lệch’ về Việt Nam Cộng hoà

Cuộc chiến Việt Nam đã đi qua gần 50 năm, nhưng những tác động của nó vẫn từng ngày ảnh hưởng lên cuộc sống của bao người Việt Nam, kể cả những thế hệ sinh sau đẻ muộn, trưởng thành ở một đất nước xa xôi bên nửa kia địa cầu của dải đất hình chữ S.

Câu chuyện của một đứa trẻ Việt lớn lên ở Mỹ, từ nhỏ đã bị chế nhạo ở trường rằng “Miền Nam của mày thua là đúng rồi”, nay trở một học giả, tiến sĩ chuyên nghiên cứu về lịch sử Việt Nam, có thể sẽ đặt ra nhiều vấn đề đáng suy nghĩ về những gì đã và đang diễn ra sau cái ngày được gọi là “thống nhất đất nước”.

“Thua là đúng rồi”

“Mình xin giới thiệu là tên là Alex Thái Đình Võ. Mình hiện là giáo sư nghiên cứu tại Trung tâm Việt Nam và Lưu trữ ở Đại học Texas Tech, chuyên nghiên cứu về Á Châu, đặc biệt là về vấn đề Việt Nam”, vị giáo sư trẻ tuổi với nước da đậm màu Á châu bắt đầu câu chuyện với VOA về cái duyên đến với cái nghề “ít tiền mà nhiều ưu phiền” này của mình.

“Thái sang Hoa Kỳ năm 8 tuổi. Khi mình còn nhỏ, lúc người Mỹ bắt đầu dạy trong nhà trường về cuộc chiến Việt Nam hay lịch sử Việt Nam, mình nhớ là khoảng lớp 7, lớp 8, khi giáo viên bắt đầu cho học sinh xem những bộ phim gọi là bộ phim documentary (phim tài liệu) về cuộc chiến Việt Nam, thì sau khi xem bộ phim đó và học sơ về cuộc chiến, có một cậu học sinh đặt ra câu hỏi cho mình là ‘Gia đình của bạn thuộc phe nào trong cuộc chiến?’. Ở lứa tuổi đó thì thú thật khi sang Hoa Kỳ, bố mẹ cũng không nói gì nhiều cho mình về cuộc chiến, cũng không dạy mình phải hận thù hay biết bên này, bên kia… Nhưng khi cậu đó đặt câu hỏi đó thì mình mới nhớ ở nhà thường hay nói gia đình mình là thuộc miền Nam Việt Nam. Mình mới nói ‘The South’ (miền Nam), thì cậu đó mới chỉ tay vào mặt mình mà cười kiểu chế nhạo và nói ‘À, vậy thì gia đình mày thua là đúng rồi!’. Đối với một đứa học với lớp 7, lớp 8, mà khi một người khác nói với mình là gia đình mày thua là đúng rồi thì nó đánh một dấu hỏi trong đầu mình là ‘Thua là một chuyện, nhưng mà thua là đúng rồi có nghĩa là như thế nào?’”.

Về nhà, Alex Thái hỏi và xin phép bố cho đọc tất cả những cuốn sách có trong nhà viết về Việt Nam. Cậu bé chẳng bao giờ ngờ rằng câu chuyện ở lớp ngày hôm đó đã khởi đầu cho một hành trình lớn, đặt viên gạch đầu tiên cho sự nghiệp nghiên cứu về cuộc chiến Việt Nam và lịch sử Việt Nam của mình sau này.

“Đến khi mình bắt đầu học ở trường Đại học University of California Berkeley là một trường rất nổi tiếng, nhưng trong thời chiến cũng nổi tiếng là trường phản chiến, mình mới lấy một lớp gọi là ‘Peace and Conflict’ (tạm dịch ‘Hòa bình và Xung đột’) với một vị giáo sư khi xưa là một người lính trong binh chủng của Hoa Kỳ trong thời chiến tranh Việt Nam”, Alex Thái hồi tưởng.

Cậu sinh viên Alex Thái lúc đó nhận thấy những điều vị giáo sư người Mỹ chủ trương phản chiến này giảng dạy “tương đối một chiều”. Vị giáo sư cho rằng nước Mỹ đã đưa ra quyết định không đúng. Lẽ ra Mỹ phải giúp cho phe thắng cuộc (tức miền Bắc), còn phe mà Mỹ giúp là Việt Nam Cộng Hòa là một phe nhu nhược, không có lập trường, không có chủ trương, và thường bị gọi là “con rối của Hoa Kỳ”.

“Khi đó, một cô trợ giảng cho ông, gọi là graduate student, sau buổi học đó, cô mới nghiêng qua người bạn của cô nói, mà cô lại ngồi trước mặt mình, cô nói một câu là ‘À, bây giờ tôi hiểu vì sao gia đình tôi thua là đúng rồi’. Khi đó, nó tạo cho mình một cảm giác là người giáo sư này có một ảnh hưởng rất lớn, kể cả đối với những người qua bên này để tị nạn, qua Hoa Kỳ định cư”.

“Đến mùa Mid-term (giữa kỳ), giáo sư ra đề cho mình viết. Mình mới quyết định không viết bài theo đề giáo sư đưa ra, mà mình viết bài yêu cầu giáo sư vào nửa mùa sau nên dạy cho có sự công bằng hơn, đưa vào thêm những tư liệu có nhiều khía cạnh hơn… Thế rồi mình nhận lại điểm giáo sư cho là điểm F trừ (F-). Ngoài điểm F trừ, giáo sư còn cho viết thêm một trang giấy và nói rằng ‘Tôi cho anh điểm này vì anh không viết theo yêu cầu của tôi, mà anh lại có những quan điểm như vầy đối với tôi là tại vì anh chưa thoát ra được sự cay đắng của việc gia đình anh thua cuộc trong cuộc chiến vừa rồi’”.

Từ câu chuyện ở lớp và nhận xét của vị giáo sư đại học, Alex Thái bắt đầu có ý định thay đổi lựa chọn nghề nghiệp.

Như bao đứa trẻ người Việt lớn lên ở Mỹ, Alex Thái cũng gánh trên vai ước mơ và hy vọng của một gia đình tị nạn. Để từ bỏ giấc mơ trở thành luật sư (vốn là một trong những nghề nghiệp danh giá mà nhiều người Việt hướng cho con cái như bác sĩ, kỹ sư…), Alex Thái đã phải nghĩ đến một bức tranh lớn hơn, đó là ngành nghề nào sẽ giúp anh mang lại những tác động tích cực, hiệu quả cho xã hội hơn, theo lời khuyên của một chuyên gia tư vấn tâm lý người Mỹ. Và Alex Thái đã chọn nghiên cứu về lịch sử Việt Nam, một ngành anh “đam mê” hơn là một công việc mang lại sự thoải mái tài chính, để có thể có tiếng nói cho mình và “nói lên những khía cạnh đa chiều” của cuộc chiến, của lịch sử Việt Nam để cả người Việt lẫn người Mỹ, hay bất cứ ai quan tâm tới Việt Nam, họ sẽ biết đến Việt Nam trong chiều kích đa chiều ấy.

“Mình chạy trốn khỏi Việt Nam cũng là mục đích để thấy được sự đa chiều, để có tự do, để thấy được cái đúng cái sai, thì tại sao bây giờ mình sống ở một đất nước tự do thì mình không đi làm việc đó”, Alex Thái lý giải thêm cho quyết định lựa chọn ngành nghề của mình.

Quyết tâm thành nhà nghiên cứu thực thụ

Chọn học, ra trường, trở thành tiến sĩ không khó đối với Alex Thái cho bằng những trở lực mà anh gặp phải trên con đường thực hiện những dự án nghiên cứu, từ cả phía Việt Nam lẫn ở Mỹ.

“Khi mình bắt đầu viết hay nói lên những tiếng nói mà xưa nay người ta không muốn mình nói thì sẽ gặp nhiều cản trở. Từ khía cạnh người Mỹ trong ngành khoa cử-giáo dục, nhiều người đã nắm hệ thống nghiên cứu bao nhiêu năm rồi thì họ không muốn những tiếng nói của mình được nói lên. Cơ hội dành cho những người giống như mình lại ít hơn. Họ không xem trọng mình. Họ thường hay nói là ‘Anh là con em của VNCH nên anh sẽ nói như vậy thôi’, hay là họ xem thường những nghiên cứu của mình. Nhưng chính vì vậy nên mình phải cố gắng vươn lên. Mình làm nghiên cứu thì mình phải làm nghiên cứu tốt hơn để khi nghiên cứu của mình ra, mình có buổi phát biểu hay hội thảo thì mình phải đưa ra chứng cớ rõ ràng, mình chứng tỏ với người ta là ‘Tôi không phải chỉ là con em của một người VNCH không, mà tôi là một nhà nghiên cứu đứng đắn, làm việc đúng và đang nói lên những tiếng nói mà xưa nay các vị đã không viết, không nói về, không cho được lên sách, không đưa đến giảng đường”.

Cản trở từ Việt Nam và tại Việt Nam trong những lần Alex Thái trở về để thực hiện các dự án nghiên cứu thì không thể kể hết, nhất là sau khi nhà nghiên cứu trẻ bắt đầu có những công bố hay phát biểu về công trình của mình trên báo chí, truyền thông.

“Mình gặp những đe dọa, nghe nói là từ phía nhà cầm quyền Việt Nam, nói là Thái không nên làm những cái nghiên cứu như vậy. Nhưng mình cứ tiếp tục làm công việc của mìn. Vì sao? Vì mình nghĩ công việc mình làm là đúng và mình cũng không lựa chọn phe này phe nọ về mặt chính trị. Mình là một người làm sử, mình chỉ có thể nói ra những gì mình tìm hiểu được và mình biết được. Còn sự cản trở thì nó luôn luôn đến với mình…”

Những công trình nghiên cứu của Giáo sư Alex Thai Vo đã được tập hợp lại cùng với một nhóm học giả gốc Việt và xuất bản dưới dạng một bộ sách về lịch sử Việt Nam, nhằm bổ sung góc nhìn khác, “đa chiều” hơn về nền Cộng hoà vốn đã tồn tại ở Việt Nam từ trước khi chủ nghĩa cộng sản du nhập. Bộ sách được giới học thuật Mỹ đánh giá cao này hiện đang được giới thiệu ở các bang của Hoa Kỳ với mục tiêu đưa chúng trở thành sách giáo khoa được giảng dạy trong các trường học hay được giới thiệu trong các thư viện trên đất Mỹ.

Cuộc chiến đau lòng giữa anh em

Sau những ngày tháng đắm chìm trong nghiên cứu, tìm tòi về một chính thể Cộng hoà từng tồn tại và đang bị lãng quên, bị nhìn “thiên lệch, khi được hỏi liệu đâu là những điểm mấu chốt mà vị giáo sư trẻ tuổi muốn lưu ý trong cuộc chiến và lịch sử Việt Nam, Alex Thái nói:

“Khi nói tới lịch sử, người ta hay nói lịch sử được viết bởi những người thắng cuộc. Từ những trang sử sinh viên học trong nhà trường từ lớp 1 cho đến đại học, hầu như không nhắc tới giai đoạn của cuộc nội chiến giữa chính quyền miền Bắc và chính quyền miền Nam, tức Việt Nam Cộng Hòa, mà chỉ gói gọn trong những câu nói ‘nguỵ quyền’, ‘nguỵ quyền theo Mỹ’ và tất cả đều là cuộc chiến kháng chiến chống Mỹ cứu nước, chứ không phải là cuộc nội chiến giữa những anh em với nhau, mà mỗi bên đều mất và tổng cộng là gần 2 triệu người, trong khi người Mỹ chỉ mất có 58.000 người thôi”.

Theo học giả trẻ này, trên thực tế, không thể phủ nhận sự ảnh hưởng của người Mỹ, nhưng “vai chính” trong cuộc chiến vẫn thuộc về những người Việt Nam, hay nói khác hơn, đó là cuộc chiến giữa những người anh em.

“Nếu chúng ta không ghi nhận sự thật đó, sự tồn tại của nhau thì khó mà chúng ta có thể làm cho đất nước mạnh hơn, làm cho con người tin tưởng hơn, mang lại cái mà nhà nước Cộng sản hay kêu gọi là ‘hoà hợp, hoà giải’ giữa người Việt với nhau. Anh kêu gọi hoà hợp, hoà giải mà anh không công nhận sự tồn tại của tôi, lịch sử của tôi thì làm sao hoà hợp, hoà giải được?”

“Hay như vấn đề Hoàng Sa và Trường Sa, nếu một bên cứ tối ngày nói bên kia là ngụy quân ngụy quyền thì làm sao anh có thẩm quyền để nói Hoàng Sa và Trường Sa là thuộc về Việt Nam? Vì trước kia, Hoàng Sa và Trường Sa trước năm 1975 thuộc về Việt Nam Cộng Hòa 03:33 trên danh nghĩa quốc tế. Bây giờ anh cứ gọi họ là chính thể bù nhìn, không có thật, thì làm sao anh bây giờ đứng trên cương vị gì để nói đó là thuộc về Việt Nam?”, GS. Alex Thái đặt câu hỏi.

Ngoài ra, theo nhà nghiên cứu trẻ, việc nghiên cứu tới nơi tới chốn về nền cộng hoà tại Việt Nam, vốn đã du nhập vào từ những năm 1920, khi các nhà hoạt động chính trị thời đó như Phan Chu Trinh, Phan Bội Châu… mang “chủ nghĩa cộng hoà”, “tinh thần cộng hoà” từ châu Âu, Nhật Bản, Trung Quốc về.

“Thể chế Việt Nam Cộng Hòa được thành lập vào năm 1954 cho đến năm 1975 đứng vững trên cái nền tư tưởng gọi là Chủ nghĩa Cộng hòa đó. Chủ nghĩa Cộng hòa là mang đến gì? Nó đòi hỏi cái tự do của con người, tự do cá nhân, xuất phát từ cuộc cách mạng của Pháp đòi hỏi quyền công dân của con người cũng như quyền trước pháp luật. Tất cả những yếu tố đó nó khác với chủ nhịp cộng sản. Thành ra, cuộc chiến 1954-1975 nó xuất phát từ những sự khác biệt đó. Và cũng chính từ những khác biệt đó mà sự kiện xảy ra năm 1975, nó đưa đẩy nhiều người phải đành bỏ nước ra đi, vì họ không sống được dưới cái thể chế mới đó, cái thể chế mà mất đi hết tất cả các quyền tự do đó, tự do báo chí, tự do ngôn luận… Tất cả những cái đó khi người ta bị mất đi thì họ đành phải bỏ nước ra đi”.

Để tôn trọng cha mẹ, là những người đã trải qua dưới thể chế cộng sản và trải qua tù đày, mình gọi cho bố và hỏi ‘Ba ơi, con bây giờ nhận công việc này để làm nghiên cứu tìm hài cốt của những người mà khi xưa gọi là địch, là kẻ thù của những người giống như ba đó. Thì ba nghĩ như thế nào? Vì con thấy đây là một công việc mà theo con, là một công việc nhân đạo mà mình cần phải làm’. Thì thay vì người cha mình giống như mình suy nghĩ là sẽ cản trở và sẽ nói không, thì bố mình không một giây suy nghĩ và nói là ‘Con nên đi làm. Công việc này phải làm, vì dù sao cuộc chiến đã qua rồi, mình biết mình là ai. Nhưng tất cả khi ngã xuống cũng là người Việt Nam và cũng là con người. Thành ra, công việc mà mình cần phải làm là công việc mang tính nhân đạo và phải làm để mang lại sự an ủi cho tất cả. Tất cả chúng ta đều là người Việt Nam”.
