Vào ngày 30 tháng 4 năm 1975, quân đội Bắc Việt Nam đã tấn công Dinh Độc Lập ở trung tâm Sài Gòn — nay được gọi là Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh — và chấm dứt cuộc chiến kéo dài gần 20 năm gây ra tổn thất lớn cho cả Bắc và Nam Việt Nam, cũng như đồng minh của miền Nam là Mỹ.
Ngày này hiện được kỷ niệm tại Việt Nam với tên gọi là Ngày Thống nhất đất nước.
Tuần trước, tờ New York Times đưa tin rằng chính quyền Trump đã yêu cầu các nhà ngoại giao cấp cao của mình tại Việt Nam không tham gia các sự kiện liên quan đến lễ kỷ niệm, bao gồm tiệc chiêu đãi vào ngày 29 tháng 4 và lễ duyệt binh vào ngày hôm sau.

Bộ này cũng cho biết khách nước ngoài từ hơn 20 quốc gia và tổ chức, bao gồm Mỹ, sẽ tham gia lễ kỷ niệm năm nay.
