Nhân dịp Tết Mậu Tuất, Dân biểu Liên bang Hoa Kỳ John Culberson gửi lời chúc cộng đồng người Việt tại Houston, Texas và nhân dân Việt Nam một năm mới an lành, tràn đầy hy vọng và thăng tiến.
Trong một video do Chân Trời Mới đăng tải hôm 14/2, dân biểu Culberson còn gửi một thông điệp đặc biệt đến các tù nhân lương tâm đang bị giam giữ ở Việt Nam vì những hoạt động nhằm bảo vệ nhân quyền và cổ vũ cho tự do.
Ông nói:
“Tôi chia sẻ những giá trị này với quý vị, và tôi sẽ nỗ lực vận động để quý vị được tự do, để quý vị có thể đón mừng năm mới với gia đình.”
Dân biểu đảng Cộng hòa, đại diện cho khu vực 7, bang Texas nói thêm:
“Tôi kêu gọi chính quyền Việt Nam hãy chấm dứt đàn áp các nhà hoạt động nhân quyền và thả các tù nhân lương tâm ngay lập tức.”
Theo thông tin của trang Cộng đồng người Việt Quốc gia Houston, dân biểu Culberson thường lên tiếng bênh vực cho các tù nhân lương tâm Việt Nam, gần đây nhất là trường hợp tù nhân lương tâm Nguyễn Văn Oai, người vừa bị chính quyền Việt Nam tuyên án tù 5 năm vào tháng 1/2018.
