Nghiên cứu mới này được đăng thành hai bài viết trên tạp chí chuyên ngành Chest dành cho các bác sĩ về ngực ở Mỹ.
Cuộc khảo sát cho thấy ô nhiễm không khí gây tác hại từ đầu đến chân, từ bệnh tim, bệnh phổi cho đến tiểu đường và chứng mất trí nhớ, từ bệnh về gan, ung thư bàng quang cho đến giòn xương và tổn thương da. Ô nhiễm không khí cũng gây hại cho việc sinh đẻ, thai nhi và trẻ sơ sinh, báo Guardian giải thích thêm.
Kết luận này đáng lo ngại hơn trong bối cảnh các thành phố lớn của Việt Nam bị ô nhiễm không khí nghiêm trọng gây ra hàng chục nghìn cái chết mỗi năm, và các chuyên gia cảnh báo tình hình có thể xấu đi trong những năm tới.
Bụi mịn theo máu tàn phá mọi bộ phận
“Ô nhiễm không khí có thể gây hại cấp tính, gây các triệu chứng hô hấp và tuần hoàn, và cả mãn tính, tác động tới mọi cơ quan trong cơ thể”, các nhà nghiên cứu thuộc Diễn đàn Các hiệp hội Hô hấp Quốc tế viết trong nghiên cứu đăng trên Chest.
“Không khí ô nhiễm vào cơ thể qua đường hô hấp nhưng có tác động lên toàn cơ thể, phá hoại các cơ quan khác”, theo bài nghiên cứu. “Mọi người thường không nhận thức rõ việc tiếp xúc với ô nhiễm về lâu dài sẽ ảnh hưởng sức khỏe hoặc khiến các căn bệnh trầm trọng hơn như thế nào”.
Tác hại chủ yếu là do viêm nhiễm có thể lây lan toàn cơ thể, và do các hạt bụi siêu mịn đi theo máu đến mọi cơ quan.
Ô nhiễm không khí là “mối đe dọa khẩn cấp cho sức khỏe cộng đồng”, theo Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới (WHO), với trên 90% dân số toàn cầu đang hít thở không khí ô nhiễm khi ra ngoài. Những phân tích mới đây cho thấy 8,8 triệu người chết sớm mỗi năm do ô nhiễm không khí, gấp đôi các ước tính trước đó. Như vậy, hoạt động bình thường nhất có thể là hít thở không khí đang gây tử vong nhiều hơn hút thuốc lá.
Ở Việt Nam, năm 2016 hơn 60.000 người chết do bệnh tim, phổi và các chứng bệnh khác liên quan tới ô nhiễm không khí, theo thống kê năm 2018 của WHO. Như vậy trung bình 164 người mỗi ngày tử vong chỉ vì hít thở không khí. WHO đã gọi nạn ô nhiễm không khí là “kẻ giết người thầm lặng”.
Giáo sư Dean Schraufnagel, ở ĐH Illinois – Chicago, người dẫn đầu nghiên cứu trên Chest nói với Guardian “tôi không nhạc nhiên nếu mọi bộ phận cơ thể đều bị ảnh hưởng. Nếu bộ phận nào chưa thấy bị ảnh hưởng, có thể do chưa được nghiên cứu”.
Nghiên cứu này “có sức nặng khoa học” và “cho ta thêm bằng chứng”, tiến sĩ Maria Neira, giám đốc sức khỏe cộng đồng và môi trường của WHO, nói với Guardian. “Có hơn 70.000 bài báo khoa học chứng tỏ rằng ô nhiễm không khí ảnh hưởng sức khỏe chúng ta”.
Bà nghĩ còn các tác hại khác của ô nhiễm sẽ được chứng tỏ trong các nghiên cứu sắp tới. “Các bệnh như Parkinson’s hay tự kỷ, chưa có bằng chứng nhưng đã có mối liên hệ khá chặt chẽ, sắp tới đây sẽ có bằng chứng mới”.
Hà Nội, TP.HCM ô nhiễm top đầu Đông Nam Á
Một trong những thước đo mức ô nhiễm không khí là nồng độ các hạt bụi mịn, bao gồm PM10 và PM2,5 – tức các chất dạng hạt có đường kính lần lượt nhỏ hơn 10 micron và 2,5 micron. PM2,5 được cho là có thể đi sâu vào phổi và hệ tuần hoàn.
Năm 2016, nồng độ bụi PM10 và PM2.5 trung bình ở Hà Nội là 102.3 μg/m3 và 47.9 μg/m3, cao gấp năm lần mức trung bình được WHO khuyến cáo là 20 μg/m3 đối với PM10 và 10 μg/m3 đối với PM2.5, theo số liệu của WHO.
Tương tự, nồng độ bụi trung bình ở TP.HCM năm 2016 cao gấp bốn lần mức khuyến cáo: 89.8 μg/m3 đối với PM10 và 42 μg/m3 đối với PM2.5, theo WHO.
Đặc biệt, nồng độ bụi ghi nhận được bởi trạm quan trắc đặt ở các giao lộ lớn của TP.HCM như An Sương (quận 12), Mỹ Thủy (quận 2) vượt mức cho phép tới 8-9 lần, theo thống kê của Sở Tài nguyên – Môi trường TP.HCM.
Theo một buổi tọa đàm vào tháng ba, nồng độ bụi siêu mịn PM2.5 trong không khí, theo trạm đo đặt tại Đại sứ quán Mỹ ở Hà Nội, đã vượt quá quy chuẩn an toàn của Việt Nam 88 ngày trong năm 2018, và đạt mức trung bình 40,7 microgram/m3.
Tuy nhiên nếu tính theo quy chuẩn của WHO, nồng độ PM2.5 vượt quá ngưỡng an toàn 232 ngày trong năm 2018.
Hà Nội xếp thứ 2 trong khu vực Đông Nam Á và 209 trong tổng số 3.000 thành phố được xếp hạng về mức độ ô nhiễm bụi PM2.5, theo báo cáo “Chất lượng Không khí Thế giới 2018” của công ty IQAir. TP.HCM xếp thứ 15 trong Đông Nam Á và 455 trên thế giới.
Tiến sĩ Lê Việt Phú, nhà kinh tế học ở ĐH Fulbright Việt Nam, cho biết trong một nghiên cứu năm 2013 tình trạng ô nhiễm không khí ở Việt Nam đã tăng trong 20 năm nay và sẽ tồi tệ hơn trong tương lai nếu không có biện pháp khắc phục.
Đến năm 2035 con số tử vong vì ô nhiễm môi trường có thể lên đến 100.000 người một năm, theo nghiên cứu có tựa đề “Ước lượng thiệt hại sức khỏe và chi phí kinh tế của ô nhiễm không khí tại TP.HCM, giai đoạn 1990-2013” do tiến sĩ Phú thực hiện.
Theo ước tính của ông, con số này tại Việt Nam đã tăng gấp đôi trong giai đoạn 1990-2013, lên đến 40.000 người năm 2013. Thiệt hại về người dẫn đến thiệt hại kinh tế tương đương 5-7% GDP vào năm 2013.
Sở Tài nguyên Môi trường Hà Nội từng cảnh báo tại một hội thảo năm 2017 rằng tỷ lệ người dân bị viêm phổi hay phải nhập viện vì khó thở có thể tăng gấp đôi vào năm 2020 nếu thành phố không có các biện pháp giảm ô nhiễm.
Tiến sĩ Hồ Quốc Bằng, chuyên gia về ô nhiễm không khí từ Viện Tài nguyên và Môi trường, ĐH Quốc gia TP. HCM, nói trong một buổi tọa đàm tháng tư rằng người dân nên bảo vệ mình bằng cách đeo các loại khẩu trang có thể ngăn được bụi mịn, và khẩu trang vải thông thường không ngăn được loại bụi này, theo một bản tin của TTXVN.
Tác hại lên phổi và tim
Theo nghiên cứu trên tạp chí Chest, tác động của ô nhiễm không khí bắt đầu khi hít thở. Ô nhiễm gây khó thở, gây các bệnh như hen suyễn, khí thủng phổi và ung thư phổi, đồng thời tăng nguy cơ đau tim do làm hẹp động mạch.
