Twitter cho hay đã đình chỉ 936 tài khoản và rằng chiến dịch này dường như là một nỗ lực có phối hợp được nhà nước hỗ trợ xuất phát từ Trung Quốc.
Facebook cho biết đã hủy các tài khoản và các trang mạng từ một mạng lưới nhỏ mà qua điều tra công ty phát hiện các đường dẫn tới những cá nhân có liên hệ tới chính phủ Trung Quốc.
Các cuộc biểu tình ở Hong Kong, một trong những thách thức lớn nhất củaChủ tịch Trung Quốc Tập Cận Bình kể từ khi ông lên nắm quyền năm 2012, khởi sự từ tháng 6 để phản đối dự luật dẫn độ cho phép đưa nghi can sang Trung Quốc xét xử. Từ tháng 6 tới nay, các cuộc xuống đường của ngườidân Hong Kong đã chuyển thành những lời kêu gọi dân chủ rộng lớn hơn.
Twitter nói các tài khoản bị họ khống chế gây phương hại tới tính chính đáng và quan điểm chính trị của phong trào biểu tình ở Hong Kong.
Trong một thông báo khác, công ty truyền thông xã hội này cho biết họ đang cập nhật chính sách quảng cáo trên trang Twitter và từ nay sẽ không chấp nhận các quảng cáo từ các cơ quan truyền thông nhà nước.
