Quy định mới cũng được đưa ra như một phần trong chiến dịch của chính quyền Tổng thống Donald Trump nhằm chống lại các hoạt động gây ảnh hưởng và do thám của Trung Quốc.
Bộ Ngoại giao Mỹ cho biết cơ quan này cũng sẽ hành động để đảm bảo mọi tài khoản mạng xã hội của đại sứ quán cũng như của các cơ quan lãnh sự Trung Quốc được “xác minh chính xác”.
Việc Washington đưa ra thêm chính sách siết chặt quản lý với hoạt động của các nhà ngoại giao Trung Quốc ở Mỹ là động thái mới nhất trong nhiều biện pháp ứng phó với Trung Quốc của chính quyền ông Trump ở thời điểm cuộc bầu cử tổng thống Mỹ nhiệm kỳ mới đang tới gần.

Cũng tại cuộc họp báo hôm nay 2-9, Ngoại trưởng Mỹ Mike Pompeo cho biết ông Keith Krach – thứ trưởng Ngoại giao Mỹ đặc trách phát triển kinh tế, năng lượng và môi trường – gần đây cũng đã gửi thư tới ban quản trị các trường ĐH ở Mỹ để cảnh báo họ về những nguy cơ từ Trung Quốc.
“Những nguy cơ này có thể xuất hiện ở dạng thức những nguồn ngân sách không hợp pháp cho nghiên cứu, đánh cắp tài sản trí tuệ, hăm dọa sinh viên nước ngoài và cả những nỗ lực bí mật săn lùng tài năng”, ông Pompeo nói.
