Năm 1969, người được giải Nobel là nhà văn Ireland Samuel Beckett (1906–1989), tác giả : Chờ đợi Godot. Có 184 đề cử trong năm này, nhiều nhà văn được 5-8 đề cử. Samuel Beckett

Ông Hồ Hữu Tường sinh tại làng Thường Thạnh, quận Cái Răng, tỉnh Cần Thơ.
Năm 1926, Hồ Hữu Tường sang Pháp học tại trường Đại học Marseille và nạp luận án thi Cao học Toán tại Đại học Lyon. Tại Pháp ông kết bạn và tham gia hoạt động chính trị với những nhà ái quốc lưu vong như Nguyễn Thế Truyền, Phan Văn Trường, Nguyễn Văn Tạo, Tạ Thu Thâu, Phan Văn Hùm, Phan Văn Chánh v.v. và gia nhập Đệ Tứ Quốc tế.
Tóm lại ông từng là một người cộng sản và đã từ bỏ cộng sản. Bị Pháp bắt tù, sau đó bị Ngô Đình Diệm bắt xử tử hình, nhưng nhờ Albert Camus và những trí thức khác như thủ tướng Ấn Độ Nehru viết thư can thiệp nên chỉ bị đày ra Côn Đảo.
Cuối đời, ông bị đưa đi cải tạo vào năm 1978. Ông mất 1980.
